The Spiraled Stem Floral Design incorporates environmentally sustainable flowers, products, materials, and practices into our studio and every project we do. Flowers are often an overlooked element of eco-friendly decor, and now we have made it easy for eco-conscious companies, event planners, individuals, and brides to go green in every color.

Christine Saunders founded The Spiraled Stem Floral Design in April 2004 and is a leading expert on green floral design. Christine’s floral design experience began in high school with a part time job at a local flower shop, but her passion for flowers was put on the back burner as she pursued her college degree in Urban Studies with an emphasis in Public Administration at San Diego State University. She occasionally worked for a friend’s flower shop, but it wasn’t until she moved to Orange County after graduation that her passion was rediscovered. She had designed a half dozen weddings before taking on the challenge of doing her own (which she doesn’t recommend to brides!). It was a huge success and The Spiraled Stem was officially born.

Christine continued her professional career as a city planner while building her business, and it was her experience as a planner at the Port of Los Angeles that inspired her to apply the principles she was learning on the job to her floral design business. Christine’s dual passions for floral design and sustainability were merged when she decided that The Spiraled Stem would “go green”. She found sources on organic and eco-label flowers, such as VeriFlora, and more environmentally friendly containers, such as the Blumebox.

Christine has since become a leading expert in environmentally sustainable floral design and has spoken to the Association of Bridal Consultants Orange County, presented at the South Coast Plaza Spring Garden Show, and did a segment on green wedding decor on the NBC 10! Show in Philadelphia. Her work has been widely published in Brides Southern California Magazine, Architectural Digest, Ceremony Magazine, Grace Ormonde Wedding Style (online), Bride and Bloom Magazine, and Orange County Home Magazine (see press page for full editorial profile).

Christine personally works with each client to develop the decor vision for their events and manages the Spiraled Stem team during all stages of execution. Christine’s enthusiasm for promoting the use of eco-friendly flowers is infectious and she is frequently called on for consultations on greening other businesses.

Christine is happily married to her husband Darrell and is originally from San Diego, CA. Her current guilty pleasure is reading Nora Roberts novels (all of which show appreciation for flowers!)
